Football opens home season Sept. 14
The Bemidji State University football team has placed sixth in the 2013 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. The poll shows coaches predictions for the upcoming football season.
Seniors Avery Walker (RB, Milwaukee, Wis.) and Matthew Shaver (DL, St. Cloud, Minn.) were named Bemidji States Players to Watch.
Over 100 student athletes are on the Beavers roster for the 2013-2014 football season, and head coach Jeff Tesch is entering his 18th season at BSU with a 113-71 career record.
BSU finished the 2012 campaign 7-4 overall to tie for fifth and with a 6-1 record captured a share of the NSIC North Title with University of Minnesota Duluth. Last season, BSUs defense finished 15th nationally in total defense and rushing defense and 18th in scoring defense.
The Beavers opened their 2013 campaign with an away game at Winona State on Sept. 5. BSU trailed 27-3 in the first half, but scored 31 unanswered points to steal a 34-27 overtime victory from the Warriors.

BSU students perform waste audit for Beltrami County
This past July, for several hours each day, Bemidji State students donned rubber gloves and dug through the garbage at the Beltrami County Community Service Center.
The students, who were taking People in the Environment courses on campus during summer sessions, were part of a group coordinated by BSUs Sustainability Office the county improve and expand recycling programs on its downtown Bemidji campus.
The Community Service Center, home to nine county, state and school district programs including early childhood education, public health, veterans services and the offices of the 9th Judicial District, was chosen for the project as it is one of the largest buildings on the county campus.
Partnering with BSU was a comfortable decision for us, said Steve Shadrick, Green Team leader with Beltrami County, said. We knew they had the experiences and the resources available to complete the audit.
The county approached BSU in the fall of 2012 to begin discussions on recycling programs. Caitlyn Schuchhardt, a Minnesota GreenCorps representative who spent the last year working at BSU, coordinated a pair of waste audits to provide a baseline measure for how the Sustainability Office would advise the county to proceed with its recycling efforts.
We wanted to see what their waste stream looked like, how much recycling they already had and how much trash they were going through each day, Schuchhardt said. We wanted to get an idea of what we would be dealing with.
The first audit took place in January, with around 20 BSU students participating. At the end of each day for an entire week, maintenance staff delivered the buildings garbage to a store room instead of throwing it in dumpsters. There, the BSU students opened each bag and sorted the contents by hand to determine what sort of things were being thrown away in the building. Recyclable material was sorted out into two different categories -- containers and fiber products -- and weighted, and the total amount of garbage collected was weighted as well.
The audit was repeated in July to provide a comparison to the results of the first audit. While summer traffic in the building was much different than during the January audit, the group still saw measurable reductions in the amount of recyclable material that was making its way into the garbage.
The first audit found that 34 percent of the buildings waste stream could have been recycled instead, which Schuchhardt indicated was in line with expectations. Nearly five percent of the total waste was recyclable containers, and 29 percent was fiber product such as paper and cardboard.
The second audit showed that only about 30 percent of the buildings waste could have been recycled, while the total percentage of recyclable containers dropped to less than four percent and fiber product declined to 26 percent.
The county also took advantage of the waste audits to reinforce internal messaging about existing recycling and material disposal programs. During the first waste audit, several printer toner cartridges were found in the buildings waste.
After the first audit, the county began installing recycling bins which have since spread to the entire campus.
We are implementing better recycling programs within our campus buildings to be more environmentally friendly and to help set an example for others, Shadrick said. We figured there would be room for improvement, but we also figured we already did a pretty good job of recycling in this building. The waste audit proved those thoughts to be true -- positive, but with room for improvement.
The Sustainability Office is planning a third audit in Jan. 2014 to measure the buildings waste stream during a time when activity in the building should be closer to the conditions of the initial audit, and to give a year-over-year measure of changes.
The improvement that was measured in the waste stream between the first and second audits gives the group hope that its efforts, and the efforts of the county, are having a positive impact on the way people in the Community Service Center view the things they choose to throw away.
I think overall, people start to think about waste differently, Erika Bailey-Johnson, BSU sustainability coordinator, said. Its one thing to have a recycling program, but when people realize that a buildings waste is going to be weighed and measured, you start paying attention.

BSU students present at Southeast Medieval Association
Three Bemidji State University students presented at the annual 2013 Southeast Medieval Association conference, held Oct. 3-5 at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C.
BSU graduate student Sarah Barott and juniors Meagan Brault and Rachel Munson were invited to attend the conference by Dr. Larry Swain, chair of BSUs Department of English. Swain and the students seek to develop a strong medieval studies program on campus and travelled to the conference to share methods they are using to build interest in the medieval period.
On Oct. 5, the group presented a roundtable discussion entitled Teaching Anglo-Saxon Language, Literature and Culture to Undergraduates.
It was intimidating, for sure, but this time period is one that I am very passionate about and was very confident in the efforts that we are putting forth to help foster this program at Bemidji State, says Munson, a history and humanities double-major, with an English minor, from Bemidji. Overall, it was a blast and the positive feedback was definitely encouraging.
Swain has been at Bemidji State for four years, and in that time he has offered many courses that are specific to those who want to study the Middle Ages. The wide range of courses, from medieval languages to medieval monsters, was a defining point of the presentation.
We made a splash at SEMA, Swain said.
The team also discussed the creation of the Bemidji State University Medieval Club and how they use the club to appeal to their peers in hopes of creating a larger following of medieval studies.
The clubs presentation at the conference was strong, said Barott, who graduated from Bemidji State in the spring of 2013 with a bachelor of science degree in history. We discussed how to teach medieval literature to undergrads, and found that the program we have started at Bemidji State is an inspiration to other professionals in the field. We want to show that medieval studies can apply to all walks of life and be applied to any area of study. I think we achieved this goal.

Mathius wins Exhibitor Media Group scholarship
The Exhibitor Media Group is has awarded a scholarship to Phoebe Mathius, a senior design technology major at Bemidji State University.
Mathius, from Taiping, Perak, Malaysia, will graduate in May, 2014, with a bachelor of science degrees in design technology, with specializations in exhibit design and print and electronic digital design, and mass communications.
I am a distance learner now, Mathius says, I have added two emphases to my design technology degree and am working toward completing both through the next year by doing internships in St. Paul and Minneapolis.
On Sept. 27, Mathius finished an internship with Skyline in Eagan, Minn., and moved on to an internship at Star Exhibits in Minneapolis, Minn., which runs through December.
We at Exhibitor Media Group believe it is important to give back to our industry, and one way to do that is to help support students pursuing a career in the field of exhibit design said Randal Acker, president and chief operating officer of Exhibitor Media Group and an adjunct faculty member in BSUs Department of Technology, Art and Design. Bemidji States program is vital to our industry, because it is laying the critical foundation for our industrys next generation of designers.
Randy has been a huge influence on me, and so has BSU professor Bonnie Higgins, Mathius said. Both of them have never once given up on me, and have gone through great lengths to encourage and come to my aid. I have never been more proud to be part of the technology, art and design community at BSU.
Bemidji States exhibit design specialization has roots back to 1992, when Dr. Kermit Anderson and other faculty began adding exhibit-related courses to the curriculum. Today the program has a nearly 100-percent placement rate for exhibit design graduates.
The exhibit industry is so supportive of our program and students through classroom activities, presentations, mentorships, internships and scholarships for our students, Higgins said. All of these make such a difference for our students and program.
